Bob Wirz has done a terrific job of keeping up to date with independent baseball players as they progress through affiliated baseball and into the Major Leagues. According to his count, since the 1993 inception of independent baseball, Chris Colabello became the 38th player to start his pro baseball career in the independent baseball leagues and then reach a Major League roster. Only 12 have been position players.
According to Bob’s count none of the players, however, had played in the independent leagues for 7 seasons before beginning his climb toward the Majors.
Here is Bob’s terrific recap including quotes from Colabello:
By Bob’s count, roughly 175 players have spent time in the independent leagues before joining a MLB team roster. Again, only 38 of those 175 players started their careers in the independent leagues. Most were drafted or signed as free agents with affiliated Minor League teams before becoming a part of independent baseball.
