The past few weeks have seen a flurry of specialty, promotional uniforms across all of minor league baseball including the independent leagues. Here are just some of the announcements:
- San Rafael Pacifics announced that they will wear women’s baseball uniform dresses (akin to the movie “A League Of Their Own”) as a promotion for raising money for breast cancer survivors. Here is the link.
- The Rockland Boulders unveiled a new grey road jersey with the “New York” wording on the front. Here is the link.
Specialty uniforms, caps and other game-worn items have long been a staple of promotions across the minor leagues. The question is, ultimately, how do they attract long-term profitability for the teams and how do they add more value for the fan? This is not an easy question to answer but there are some thoughts. Feel free to add your own ideas to this post.
- Embed Twitter hashtags on the backs of the jerseys – or the “@” symbol for the Twitter channel – used by the charitable organization. That way fans can get more information about the charity while simultaneously Tweeting about the organization while watching the game
- Find a way to mass-produce the uniforms which sell out well and have the charity, assuming it has a national presence, to e-mail its donors a link to buy the jerseys. That way the team can make more money and the charity can have a unique item work out in public around the country, thereby giving the organization more exposure nationally
- Embed a QR Code into the uniform so that people can scan the code and find out more about the charity and/or the players on the team
- Many other ways to squeeze more benefit out of any “uniform/jersey” promotion
Feel free to contribute your thoughts.
