56 Year Old Knuckleball Pitcher Trying Out In Pacific Association

Here is an interesting story.  A 56 year-old pitcher is attempting to play in the Pacific Association by trying out for the Vallejo Admirals.  He talks about his journey with independent teams in the 1980’s (before the 1993 inception of independent baseball) and several other factors including his switch from outfielder to pitcher.

This link will take you to the Vallejo Admirals website’s story:

There have been older pitchers who have pitched for one game such as Pat Jordan (Waterbury Spirit in the 1990’s Northeast League), Bill Lee (Pacific Association) and Paul Risso (Pecos League, 2013).   Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe also threw one pitch in the Northern League in 1999.

None has stayed on an independent team’s roster for more than a couple of days at the most.

There also have been older position players who have had a one-game appearance such as Buck O’Neil in the Northern League and Minnie Minoso playing for the Saint Paul Saints in his late 70’s.

Should Wright make the Admirals roster then he would be the oldest player/pitcher with multiple days on an active independent baseball team roster in recent memory.  More on this should he make the opening day roster.
