The United Shore Professional Baseball League’s (USPBL powered by UWM) Reading Program is gearing up for another packed March, as reading month starts soon! This free opportunity is offered at any school that would like to provide an incentive to its students for achieving reading goals.
The reading goals are set by teachers, which can include anything from reading a set number of books or minutes per day, turning in literacy assignments, participating in spirit days, or completing popular programs like One School, One Book programs. Each student who achieves the reading goal set by their teacher receives one free ticket to a 2024 USPBL baseball game at Jimmy John’s Field (May 17-Sept. 7). Educators assisting with the program will also receive a free ticket. At the game the school or family attends, all USPBL Reading Program participants are encouraged to join the players and coaches on the field for all pre-game festivities and special recognition.
“We have really created a great program for schools in Metro Detroit to use. We are here to enhance a program that is already in place in the classroom,” said USPBL Community Relations Coordinator Noah Theiler. “I’m really looking forward to the start of our 2024 season so we can recognize the 60,000 students that participate and achieve their reading goals in March.”
USPBL Reading Program Enrollment is open at this time, and this year’s participation comes with a few extra perks. The school that gets the most ticket redemption will earn a pizza party and anyone student who makes it to Jimmy John’s Field will get a free foam finger!
As USPBL CEO and Founder Andy Appleby said, “I learned to read through collecting baseball cards when I was a young boy, so we understand how sports can make reading such a positive experience. We have achieved record participation numbers of more than 68,000 students with this program, and now, in our ninth year, we know this is a wonderful way to interact with the students in these great communities during March is Reading Month. We look forward to recognizing their accomplishments at Jimmy John’s Field along with our 2024 USPBL Reading Program sponsors Hungry Howie’s and CGC Water Treatment.”Follow the USPBL through reading month as the league and its team mascots visit Metro Detroit Schools and encourage students to reach their reading goals.
