BOX SCORE AND GAME STATS By Adam Rickert Eastside Diamond Hoppers 4 AT Utica Unicorns 2 UTICA — Friday night’s USPBL action saw Connor Root pitch seven marvelous innings and lead his Eastside Diamond Hoppers to a 4-2 win over the Utica Unicorns. Root, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Nashua, New Hampshire, did not allow a single run while only surrendering five hits and a walk in seven innings. He racked up eight strikeouts, finishing up his night by punching out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh. “Corey called a great game, I didn’t have to shake him off at all,” Root said of his catcher, Corey Caswell. “My fastball felt good, changeup felt like it was moving, slider felt good but I’ve got to give it up to the guys on defense, they made some great plays.” Root’s magnificent outing was a breath of fresh air for the Diamond Hoppers, who gave up 13 runs to the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers on Thursday. “I was taught in baseball you’ve to got have a short memory,” Root said. “If you got beat pretty bad, you still come out the next day because that game’s over.
