BOX SCORE AND GAME STATS By Adam Rickert Utica Unicorns 3 AT Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers 9 UTICA — The Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers sure appeared to be back to their winning ways Wednesday night, opening this week’s USPBL action with a convincing 9-3 victory over the Utica Unicorns. The win was the Beavers’ second in a row after they lost their previous seven matches. By the fifth inning, all nine of the team’s starters had hit safely at least once. The Beavers opened the game by scoring one run in each of the first three innings, beginning with a first-inning solo homer by second baseman DJ Gee. With a 3-0 lead and two on in the fourth, catcher Ray Ortega busted the game open, blasting a three-run home run over the left field wall. “I got up on a 2-1 count and was looking for a pitch to hit hard,” said Ortega. “I’m glad I was able to come through for my team.” The home run was the second of the year for Ortega, who also singled and scored earlier in the ballgame. While the Birmingham-Bloomfield offense was spectacular, Beavers starting pitcher Andrew Nelson may have been the game’s most impressive performer. Nelson…
