BOX SCORE AND GAME STATS East Side Diamond Hoppers 1 AT Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers 2 By Adam Rickert A two-run second inning was all the offense the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers needed to claim a 2-1 victory over the Eastside Diamond Hoppers in Thursday’s special 70’s Night edition of USPBL baseball. Catcher Ray Ortega drove in the game’s first run with two outs in the bottom of the second, singling to bring home center fielder Kyle Richards, who walked earlier in the inning. “I was just trying to be a team player and drive that ball,” said Ortega. “It’s always important to score those runs early in the game.” Left fielder Dave Pepe followed suit, slapping another single and scoring DJ Martinez in the process. The Diamond Hoppers threatened to get on the scoreboard nearly every inning, but starting pitcher Alex Kinch and the Beavers were continually able to work their way out of trouble. The leadoff man reached base for Eastside in five of the nine innings, yet the Beavers were able to strand a total of nine Hoppers on the bases throughout the game.
