Unicorns Clinch No. 1 Seed Over Mammoths

UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (24-20) finished the regular season as the no. 1 seed with Saturday night’s win over the Westside Woolly Mammoths (20-19), 5-4, at Jimmy John’s Field. The Mammoths will be the no. 3 seed heading into Championship Weekend.

For the Unicorns, Jared Weber went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Andre Demetral and Patrick Baggett both had two hits and Kyle Schmack had one hit, one run and one RBI.

RHP Garrett Bonnett pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing only one hit, picking up the win and improving this record to 5-1. The loss goes to righty Miguel Alba from the Mammoths, who tossed 3.1 innings, striking out five.

Offensively for the Mammoths, MVP candidate Colby Seltzer hit his eighth home run of the season, giving Westside the early 3-0 lead. Francis Florentino had one hit and scored twice, while Jake Walker brought in the other run.

Championship Weekend starts Thursday, September 5th, when the no. 4 Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers take on the no. 3 Eastside Diamond Hoppers at 6:30 p.m. On Friday the no. 2 Westside Woolly Mammoths will play the winner of playoff game #1 (first pitch at 6:30 pm.), with the winner of that game playing the no. 1 Utica Unicorns for the 2024 USPBL Championship at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 7.
