Strong outing from John Baker extended the Chicago Dogs win streak to four, as the team defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs, 5-4.
John Baker, who has been as reliable as possible in the Dogs pitching rotation, continued his season-long excellence, throwing five innings of two run ball.
The Dogs are now 5-1 this season in games where John Baker appears on the mound.
Chicago’s bats attacked Lincoln’s starting pitcher Dylan Beck early, scoring one run in the first inning after second baseman Brantley Bell scored on a fielder’s choice.
Chicago’s offense continued to produce runs, scoring two runs between the third and fifth innings.
In the third inning, after Bell got on base off of an error, Jacob Teter attacked the ball, hitting a single, scoring Bell, his second run of the game.
Narciso Crook added to the offensive trend in the fifth inning with a single to left field, scoring Zion Pettigrew, who had gotten on base hitting a leadoff single.
Baker had put two runners on base in the sixth inning, but wasn’t given the opportunity to attempt at escaping the jam. Baker was relieved by Jason Bilous, who allowed Lincoln to break the shutout, giving up two runs in the sixth.
Lincoln’s hot inning in the sixth inning carried over into the seventh inning, scoring two additional runs.
Cal Coughlin relieved Bilous, putting two runners in scoring position before exiting the game, with an injury.
Cal Djuraskovic entered for Coughlin, tasked with escaping a major jam. Djuraskovic, who was just used in the previous game out of the bullpen, was turned to yet again to escape the Dogs from a rough scenario.
Djuraskovic walked the first batter he faced, having the walk charged to Coughlin. Djuraskovic successfully escaped the inning with no damage, forcing Luke Roskam to ground out to first base.
With six final outs to retrieve the lost lead, the Dogs were successful. Right fielder Jesus Lujano kicked off the start of a rally after getting plunked in the back, then stealing second and third base.
Dogs designated hitter David Maberry continued, walking on a six pitch at-bat. General MacArthur IV pinch ran for Maberry, stealing second base on the first pitch watched.
Dogs shortstop Nick Novak tied the game up, hitting a sacrifice fly to deep right field, allowing Lujano to score the tying run, advancing MacArthur IV to third base.
Newly signed third baseman Zion Pettigrew came up huge in the eighth inning rally, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing MacArthur IV to tag up and score, giving the Dogs back the lead.
Dogs closer, Joey Marciano, was tasked with protecting the lead and sealing the game. Marciano did just that, going three-up, three-down, securing his league leading ninth save of the season.
The Chicago victory not only extended the team’s win streak to four games, but put the team in a great position to win the series over Lincoln in game three.
