Saltdogs Rally Late to Beat Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (9-11) lost 10-8 to the Lincoln Saltdogs at Shaw Park on Friday night.

With the Goldeyes leading 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning, Lincoln (12-6) rallied for four runs after there were two outs and no one on base to take a 9-6 lead.  Three consecutive singles from Gary Disarcina Jr., Andy Theiler, and Rand Norris produced the tying run.  Josh Altmann followed with a three-run home run to left.

The Goldeyes pulled back within 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh.  Ian Sagdal drew a one-out walk, setting up a two-run home run to right from Max Murphy.  It was Murphy’s second home run of the game.

The Saltdogs re-extended the lead with an insurance run in the ninth when Altmann hit a two-out single to centre that cashed in a leadoff triple from Disarcina.

Brandon Cunniff worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.

David Zoz (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Saltdogs after pitching two and one-third scoreless innings.

Travis Seabrooke (0-2) took the loss for the Goldeyes.

Winnipeg took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  After Andrew Martinez drew a one-out walk, Sagdal lined a two-run home run down the right field line.  Murphy followed with a solo shot to centre that made it 3-0.  A David Washington double, an Eric Rivera walk, and a wild pitch by Saltdogs’ starter Sam Bragg set up a Logan Hill sacrifice fly to right.  Rivera scored the Goldeyes’ fifth run on a two-out wild pitch.

Lincoln chipped away in the third on an RBI single from Justin Byrd.  In the top of the fourth, the Saltdogs tied the game on an Altmann sacrifice fly and a two-out, three-run home run down the right field line from Byrd.

The Goldeyes took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Reggie Pruitt Jr. scored on a Navarro sacrifice fly.

Alex Manasa started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in four innings.  Manasa walked one and struck out four.

Bragg also took a no-decision, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits in three and two-thirds.  Bragg walked two and struck out five.

Game two of the three-game series is Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m.  RJ Martinez (2-1, 2.70) faces left-hander Greg Minier (1-1, 1.20).
