HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Long Island Ducks scored seven runs in the fourth inning to overcome a 4-0 High Point lead and went on to post a 10-5 win over the Rockers at Truist Point on Tuesday night.
The loss was High Point’s 10th consecutive and leaves the Rockers at 28-19 overall on the season. High Point remains four games behind Gastonia (32-15) in the Atlantic League South Division. The Honey Hunters fell to Charleston 6-4 on Tuesday.
The Rockers got off to a great start when Tyler Ladendorf led off the bottom of the first with a double. Following a walk to Logan Morrison, Zander Wiel unloaded a three-run homer. It was Wiel’s eighth homer of the season and marked his third straight game with a home run.
The Rockers added a run in the third when Wiel was hit by a pitch and Quincy Latimore followed with a walk before a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Mike Gulino’s infield single scored Wiel and put High Point ahead 4-0.
High Point ran into trouble in the fourth when starter Kyle Mott walked the first batter he faced and then hit Deibinson Romero with a pitch. Joe Johnson (L, 0-1) was summoned from the bullpen and his first pitch was hit for a three-run homer by Rusney Castillo. After another walk and hit batter, Deven Marrero reached on an infield single to load the bases. Vladimir Frias brought around the tying run with a ground out. After a walk to Alejandro De Aza, the Rockers brought in Nathan Bates from the pen. A wild pitch scored one run and Sam Travis knocked home two more with a single.
Travis hit a solo homer in the sixth to put the Ducks up 8-4. The lead went to 9-4 in the seventh when Castillo doubled and would score on a sac fly by Deven Marrero.
High Point added a single run in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-5 when Wiel singled, moved to second on a Latimore ground out, went to third on a single by Jay Gonzalez and scored on Gulino’s single.
De Aza doubled in the eighth and scored on a Romero single to account for the 10-5 final.
Johnson took the loss after allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Long Island starter Akeel Morris (W, 2-4) went five innings and allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out three.
Wiel scored three runs and collected three RBI. Gulino finished with two hits and two RBI.
High Point and Long Island will play game two of the series on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.
