Ramirez Terrific as Goldeyes Take Series

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-11) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 5-1 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Eric Rivera doubled to right-centre with one out and came home on an RBI single to right-centre from Ian Sagdal.

Lincoln (12-8) tied the game in the top of the second when Skyler Weber hit a one-out, solo home run to right.

Winnipeg took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Hidekel Gonzalez led off with a home run down the right field line.  After there were two outs and no one on base, Raul Navarro reached on an error and took second when Rivera walked.  The Goldeyes then opened a 4-1 lead when Sagdal and Max Murphy hit back-to-back, two-out, RBI singles.

Lincoln brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the eighth when Tasker Strobel came in from the bullpen.  Strobel struck out Justin Byrd and retired the side on a groundball double play from Welington Dotel.

The Goldeyes tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Rivera.

Strobel then worked a perfect ninth to earn his fifth save of the year, and his third in which he recorded six outs.

Luis Ramirez (2-1) started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, allowing one earned run on two hits in seven innings.  Ramirez walked two and struck out seven.

Buddy Baumann (0-1) started for the Saltdogs and took the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits in four and two-thirds innings.  Baumann walked four and struck out six.

The Goldeyes are off Monday and Tuesday, and open a two-game series against the Kansas City Monarchs on Wednesday, June 8th.  First pitch at Legends Field is at 7:05 p.m.  All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
