WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-26) lost 6-4 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
Gary SouthShore (23-33) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jesus Marriaga’s fielder’s choice drove in Thomas Walraven with the game’s first run. Leugim Castillo made it 2-0 with an RBI double to left-centre. Chris Burgess capped the rally with a two-out, two-run single to left.
The Goldeyes responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Winnipeg loaded the bases on a Reggie Pruitt Jr. hit by pitch and walks to Ian Sagdal and David Washington. Raul Navarro ripped a three-run double to left-centre that pulled the Goldeyes within 4-3.
The RailCats re-extended the lead to 6-3 in the top of the second when Marriaga hit a two-out, two-run double off the right-centre field wall.
In the bottom of the second, Kevin Lachance singled up the middle leading off, stole second base, and scored the Goldeyes’ fourth run on a two-out double to right-centre from Sagdal.
Both pitching staffs settled in and allowed a combined zero runs from the third inning through the end of the game.
RailCats’ starter Adam Heidenfelder (2-5) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five and one-third innings. Heidenfelder walked two and struck out five.
Goldeyes’ starter Luis Ramirez (6-3) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits over six. Ramirez walked two and struck out a career-high 10. Ramirez retired the final 10 batters to face him, and 13 of the final 14.
