Quiet offense results in loss of series opener for Chicago Dogs, 5-1.

The Chicago Dogs entered Kane County on a five game losing streak, searching to be back in the win column.

Chicago opted to start Brooks Gosswein on the mound in the series opener. Gosswein excelled in his outing at home against Cleburne, throwing eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out seven Railroaders.

This wasn’t the case for Gosswein in Kane County. Following his stellar outing versus Cleburne, Gosswein was pulled in Kane County after five innings of work, having his pitch count reach up to 93 pitches in the middle innings.

From the start of the game, Kane County was hitting Gosswein well, scoring five runs on four hits, while walking four times against the lefty.

Throughout Gosswein’s five innings on the mound, his offense only put up one run. The lone run came in the top of the third inning, when Nick Novak singled, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, then scored on a Brantley Bell single.

Gosswein handed the ball first to Davis Pratt, who only allowed one hit over two innings. Pratt has been relied on often since signing with the team, being used five times in the past three series’.

Following Pratt’s two quick innings, the Dogs had an unusual call to the bullpen. Regular starter Jason Bilous was in to pitch the eighth inning, walking one batter and striking out two. Bilous hadn’t yet been scheduled to start in the Kane County series, but his use in the series opener hints at how thin Chicago’s bullpen is.

Chicago released relief pitcher Michael Krauza prior to the Kane County series, leaving just six pitchers in the Dogs bullpen.

The run scored from the Dogs in the third inning was the only run the team put on the board, leaving runners on base in five different innings.

Chicago will attempt to split the series in game two, having knuckleballer Kenny Serwa start on the mound.
