KANSAS CITY, KS – The Kansas City Monarchs (56-34) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 7-4 at Legends Field Thursday evening.
The Goldeyes (49-41) scored first when Raul Navarro raced home on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning.
The Monarchs however crossed the plate six times in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. First Jacob Robson hit a bases-clearing triple to left-centre field to before himself scoring on a Jan Hernandez single to centre field. Then Pete Kozma then hit a two-run double to left-centre field to cap off the rally.
Winnipeg got two of the runs back in the top of the third inning when Ian Sagdal doubled into the left field corner to knock in Reggie Pruitt Jr. and Navarro came in on Max Murphy’s ground out to shortstop to make the score 6-3 Kansas City.
Pitchers from both teams found their groove in the middle innings, with neither team able to break through until Murphy scored on Jacob Rhinesmith’s single to centre field in the top of the eighth inning, which reduced the Monarchs’ lead to 6-4.
Kansas City restored the three-run cushion in the bottom of the eighth when Alexis Olmeda hit a two-out solo home run to right field.
Jhon Vargas (4-3) was charged with the loss. He gave up six runs on five hits in two innings of work. Vargas struck out four and walked four.
Five Goldeyes relievers limited the Monarchs to one run on two hits over the final six innings, among them Freisis Adames, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day.
Winnipeg struck out a total of 13 Kansas City batters over the course of the evening.
Matt Hall (9-2) earned the win for the Monarchs, allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.
Kansas City’s bullpen was also effective, surrendering one run on just one hit. Brandon Koch retired the side in order in the top of the ninth to record his fifth save.
The Goldeyes travel north to Fargo, North Dakota overnight, where they will open their final road series of the regular season at Newman Outdoor Field Friday at 7:02 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at cjnu.ca.
Kansas City again serves as the opponent with the Goldeyes return to Shaw Park Monday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m.
