WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (1-1) beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-6 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
Tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Logan Hill crushed a solo home run to left that put the Goldeyes ahead.
The RedHawks (1-1) put the tying run on second in the top of the ninth, but Erasmo Pinales retired Drew Ward on a flyball to centre to end the game and earn his first save of the year.
Zac Ryan (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Goldeyes, while Luke Lind (1-1) took the loss in relief for the RedHawks.
Ward gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead with a two-out, solo home run to left-centre in the top of the first.
The Goldeyes answered back with five runs in the bottom half. Raul Navarro opened the inning with a double down the left field line and scored on a single to centre from Eric Rivera. Max Murphy and Hill both rallied from behind in the count to walk, which loaded the bases and set up a grand slam home run by Andrew Martinez. It was Martinez’s first grand slam as a professional.
David Washington hit a bloop, RBI double with two outs in the second that plated Rivera to make it 6-1 Winnipeg.
Sam Dexter chipped into the lead with a leadoff solo homer to left in the third, and the RedHawks pulled within 6-5 in the fourth on a three-run homer to right-centre by Kevonte Mitchell.
John Silviano led off the top of the eighth inning with a solo shot to right that briefly tied the game at 6-6.
Luis Ramirez started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on six hits in four innings. Ramirez walked one and struck out four.
Francisco Jimenez started for the RedHawks and also took a no-decision, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Jimenez walked two and struck out four.
The teams have combined for 11 home runs over the first two games of the series.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes evened their record on Saturday evening, beating the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 7-6 at Shaw Park.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Freisis Adames (0-0, 0.00) takes on left-hander Sebastian Kessay (0-0, 0.00).
