KANSAS CITY, KS – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (49-39) beat the Kansas City Monarchs 7-5 at Legends Field on Tuesday night.

Box Score

The Monarchs (54-34) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Mallex Smith drew a leadoff walk, stole both second and third, and scored on Darnell Sweeney’s RBI groundout to shortstop.

The Goldeyes answered back with a five-run top of the second.  Logan Hill came back from an 0-2 count to draw a leadoff walk.  Kevin Lachance followed with a two-run home run to left that gave Winnipeg the lead.  Deon Stafford Jr. followed with a walk, and the Goldeyes took a 4-1 lead two batters later when Raul Navarro launched a two-run home run into the Goldeyes’ bullpen in left-centre.  The home run was the Goldeyes’ 124th of the season, breaking the franchise record of 123 set in 1998.  Ian Sagdal followed Navarro’s homer with an infield single.  Sagdal stole second, took third on a wild pitch, and scored the Goldeyes’ fifth run when Max Murphy singled through the right side.

Sweeney drove in Smith with a two-out single to right in the bottom of the third.

Winnipeg responded again in the top of the fourth.  Navarro walked leading off, took second on an errant pickoff throw, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and came home on a sacrifice fly to left from Murphy.

Jacob Robson hit a solo home run to right with one out in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 6-3.

In the top of the ninth, Jacob Rhinesmith hit a sacrifice fly to deep left-centre that plated Murphy who had doubled to left-centre with one out and took third on a single from David Washington.

Kansas City rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth on an Alexis Olmeda RBI double and a Sweeney RBI single.  Tasker Strobel then struck out Robson and Jan Hernandez back-to-back to end the game with the tying runs on base.

RJ Martinez (8-4) picked up the win in relief for the Goldeyes.

Monarchs’ starter Jordan Martinson (5-2) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in two innings.  Martinson walked two and struck out two.

Alex Hart started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings.  Hart walked two and struck out two.

Game three of the four-game series is Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.  Luis Ramirez (10-5, 4.17) faces right-hander Matt Hartman (5-5, 4.61).  All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca

The Goldeyes return home on Monday, August 29th when they host the Monarchs at Shaw Park.
