SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-20) beat the Sioux City Explorers 9-7 at Lewis and Clark Park on Saturday night.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the ninth inning, the Goldeyes rallied for four runs to take the lead. Eric Rivera drew a one-out walk, and stole both second and third base. After Ian Sagdal walked, Max Murphy singled through the right side to score Rivera with the tying run. Two batters later, Reggie Pruitt Jr. lined a single to centre on a two-strike count that plated Sagdal from second. Centre fielder Chase Harris’ throw to the plate went to the backstop, which allowed Murphy to score and Pruitt to advance to third. Pruitt came home to make it 9-6 when Logan Hill reached on an error by shortstop Zack Kone.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Explorers (18-25) pulled within 9-7 on a two-out, RBI single from Trey Martin. Danry Vasquez singled to put the tying runs on base, but Tasker Strobel retired Nate Samson on a broken bat groundout to shortstop to end the game and earn his 12th save of the season.
Travis Seabrooke (3-2) picked up the win in relief for Winnipeg, while Thomas McIlraith (3-2) took the loss for Sioux City.
The Explorers opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second. Vasquez led off with a home run to centre field. Samson followed with a walk, took second on Sebastian Zawada’s groundout to shortstop, and scored on a single through the right side from Blake Tiberi. Two batters later, Tyler Rando singled through the right side to score Tiberi. After Harris bunted for a single to load the bases, Danny Amaral made it 4-0 with an infield single that scored Kone.
The Goldeyes chipped into the deficit in the next half inning. Raul Navarro drew a one-out walk, took second on a Rivera single to right, and scored Winnipeg’s first run on a single through the right side from Sagdal.
In the top of the sixth, walks to David Washington, Hill, and Hidekel Gonzalez helped load the bases with two outs. Navarro pulled the Goldeyes within 4-3 with a two-run double to right. After Kevin Lenik relieved Brandon Brosher, Rivera hit a groundball up the middle. Kone made a diving play to stop the ball from going into centre field before Rivera beat the ensuing throw to first for an infield single. Both Gonzalez and Navarro scored to put Winnipeg in front 5-4.
Goldeyes’ starter Landen Bourassa escaped a bases loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the sixth when Murphy made a reaching catch while sprinting toward the right field wall to rob Rando of extra bases and preserve the lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Tiberi tied the game with a two-out, RBI double. Kone followed with a single centre that scored Tiberi to give the Explorers a 6-5 lead.
Bourassa took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on nine hits over six innings. Bourassa walked two and struck out five.
Explorers’ starter Tyler Beardsley also took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on four hits in five innings. Beardsley walked four and struck out seven.
The Goldeyes’ offence combined to draw nine walks. The nine-inning game took three hours and 55 minutes to play, which is a new season-high for the Goldeyes.
