Goldeyes Rally in Middle Innings

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-32) beat the Milwaukee Milkmen 7-4 at Shaw Park on Tuesday night.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Raul Navarro gave Winnipeg the lead with a two-out, two-run home run to left-centre.  Max Murphy followed with a single up the middle, and scored from first when David Washington doubled to centre.

With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the sixth, Deon Stafford Jr. extended the inning with an infield single.  Eric Rivera singled to right, and the Goldeyes stretched the lead to 6-3 when Ian Sagdal’s single through the right side scored Stafford.  Rivera dashed for the plate with the Goldeyes’ seventh run when Sagdal was caught in a rundown between first and second base.

Bryan Blanton struck out the side in a scoreless top of the seventh, while Travis Seabrooke fanned a pair in the top of the eighth.

Carl Chester led off the top of the ninth with a home run down the right field line before Erasmo Pinales retired the next three hitters to close out the game.

Jhon Vargas (4-1) picked up the win in relief, pitching three shutout innings from the fourth through the sixth.

Milkmen starter Ryan Zimmerman (4-5) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in five and two-thirds innings.  Zimmerman walked two and struck out five.

The Milkmen (40-36) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Aaron Hill led off the game with an opposite-field home run to right.

In the top of the second, the Milkmen made it 3-0 on a Jeremiah Burks RBI groundout and a Jordan Garr RBI single.

Murphy walked leading off the bottom of the second and scored from first when Washington doubled to right-centre.  Two batters later, Kevin Lachance doubled to centre to score Washington and pull the Goldeyes within 3-2.

Alex Hart started for Winnipeg and took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits in three innings.  Hart walked one and struck out one.

The series concludes Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m.  Landen Bourassa (3-4, 4.20) faces right-hander AJ Jones (5-3, 5.02).
