WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (10-11) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 10-3 at Shaw Park on Saturday evening.
The Saltdogs (12-7) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, solo home run down the right field line from Justin Byrd.
In the bottom of the second, Logan Hill walked and advanced to second when Deon Stafford Jr. reached on an error. Andrew Martinez walked to load the bases, and the Goldeyes took a 1-0 lead two batters later when Hill scored on a wild pitch. A Raul Navarro infield single reloaded the bases before Eric Rivera reached on catcher’s interference to force home Stafford.
David Washington and Kevin Lachance opened the bottom of the third with back-to-back walks. Hill ripped a single to left that scored Washington to make it 3-1. Three batters later, Reggie Pruitt Jr. smacked a two-out, opposite-field three-run home run to right-centre.
The Saltdogs pulled within 6-3 in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run home run from Josh Altmann.
Stafford singled to left-centre leading off the bottom of the seventh and took second on an Andrew Martinez sacrifice bunt. Three batters later, Rivera singled through the left side to plate Stafford with the Goldeyes’ seventh run.
Singles from Murphy and Washington in the bottom of the eighth set up a three-run home run to left from Hill that made it 10-3.
RJ Martinez (3-1) started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings. Martinez walked two and struck out four.
Lincoln starter Greg Minier (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits over three innings.
Travis Seabrooke, Erasmo Pinales, and Jose Vasquez each worked a scoreless inning in relief of RJ Martinez.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Luis Ramirez (1-1, 7.58) starts for the Goldeyes.
