WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (28-24) beat the Sioux City Explorers 12-3 at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Explorers (21-30) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Tyler Rando scored on a two-out wild pitch.
After Goldeyes’ starter Luis Ramirez worked out of a first and second, no-out jam in the top of the second, the Goldeyes rallied for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. David Washington led off with an opposite-field home run to left that tied the game. Logan Hill followed with a towering opposite-field homer to right-centre that put Winnipeg in front 2-1. Kevin Lachance singled up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. After Deon Stafford Jr. reached on an error by third baseman Blake Tiberi, Hidekel Gonzalez beat out a potential groundball double play that moved Lachance to third. Justin Thompson grounded a single up the middle that scored Lachance with the Goldeyes’ third run.
Winnipeg made it 4-1 in the second when Reggie Pruitt Jr. doubled to right-centre to drive in Gonzalez. Ian Sagdal followed with a single to left that plated Thompson and Pruitt. After Max Murphy singled home Sagdal to make it 7-1, Washington blasted his second homer of the inning, a two-run shot to right that capped the nine-run frame. The Goldeyes sent 14 batters to the plate during the rally.
Sioux City sliced the Goldeyes’ lead to 9-2 in the top of the third on back-to-back doubles from Trey Martin and Tiberi before Ramirez retired 10 consecutive batters and 15 of the final 16 he faced.
Murphy led off the bottom of the fourth with a line drive home run to left that pushed the Goldeyes’ lead to 10-2.
Thompson opened the home fifth with a long home run to right-centre. It was Thompson’s first career professional home run.
The Explorers tallied a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Danry Vasquez before the Goldeyes responded in the bottom of the inning on a solo shot to right from Murphy.
Ramirez (6-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Ramirez walked none and struck out four.
Explorers’ starter Zach Hedges took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits in two innings. Hedges walked one and struck out two.
The Goldeyes’ six home runs and 15 base hits in the game both marked season-highs. Sagdal has hit safely in 10 consecutive games.
The Goldeyes are off the next three days for the American Association All-Star Break. Catcher Deon Stafford Jr. and left-handed pitcher Tasker Strobel will represent the Goldeyes at the American Association All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Chicago’s Impact Field.
The Goldeyes return to action Thursday, July 14th when they host the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Shaw Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
