Goldeyes Add Elite Spin to Bullpen

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Bryan Blanton on Friday.

Blanton made 10 relief appearances earlier this season for the High-A South Atlantic League’s Hudson Valley Renegades (New York Yankees).  The Albemarle, North Carolina native struck out 13 batters in 13.2 innings pitched.  Prior to this season, Blanton last pitched in 2019 where he posted a 2.91 ERA and 67 combined strikeouts in 46.1 innings at three levels of the Yankees’ organization.  Blanton’s slider and curveball averaged more than 2,600 and 2,900 rpms respectively in 2019.

The 26-year-old Blanton was drafted by the Yankees in the 21st round in 2017 out of Catawba College (Salisbury, North Carolina) where his 25 saves from 2015-17 were one shy of the program’s career record.  In four seasons of professional baseball, the 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander has a 4.36 ERA in 69 relief appearances with a 29 percent strikeout rate.

Earlier this week, the Goldeyes acquired rookie infielder Brandon Bohning from the Pioneer League’s Missoula PaddleHeads in exchange for future considerations.  The Northridge, California native was 3-for-12 (.250) in six games for Missoula, and made his Goldeyes’ debut on Tuesday versus Kane County.  Bohning recently finished his college career at California State University, Northridge (Los Angeles, California), and hit .272 with 23 RBI as a senior this past spring.

Last Sunday, the Goldeyes traded infielder Andrew Martinez to the Frontier League’s Ottawa Titans in exchange for a player to be named later.  Martinez hit .180 with three home runs in 17 games for the Goldeyes.

Additionally, the Goldeyes have activated right-handed pitcher Zac Ryan from the Inactive List.  Ryan has made four relief appearances this season, striking out seven in four innings, and last worked on May 21st at Lake Country.

The Goldeyes’ active roster currently stands at the American Association maximum 25 players.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes open a three-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs at home tonight.  First pitch from Shaw Park is at 6:35 p.m.
