Traverse City Tops Southern IL in a Independence Day Pitching Duel

TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums(21-25) and the Southern Illinois Miners(24-19) pitchers kept hitters off-balance all night as the Beach Bums eeked out a 2-1 win to take the middle game of this week’s series.   After a scoreless first inning, Alexis Rivera knocked a double to the right field gap with one out. Luke Lowery followed by lacing his own double down the right field line, scoring Rivera, and giving the Beach Bums an early 1-0 lead. In the fifth, Noah McGowan led off the frame with a single to right then moved to second on a Max Dutto sacrifice bunt. Connor Oliver then picked up his first hit and first RBI as a Beach Bum to double the lead. Southern Illinois scored their lone run in the ninth on an RBI single by Chance Shepard, but a close double play sealed the game for the Beach Bums.   John Havird picked up the win for Traverse City to improve to 3-3 on the season.
