JOLIET, IL- Phil Bates stole the show Sunday with his clutch hitting at the plate to lead the Joliet Slammers to a 6-5 win and sweep over the River City Rascals, July 31. Bates drove in three of the Slammers’ four runs, including a big solo home run in the seventh inning to put the Slammers back in front by two runs. Bates gave the Slammers a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double to right field to score Sikes Orvis and Casey Fletcher. Fletcher gave the Slammers a 1-0 lead on a single down the third baseline. Charlie White got a rare day off in center field, putting Bates in center for the game and at the top of the lineup. Bates usually bats last for the Slammers, but shined in his chance to bat lead off Sunday. This was Bates’ first time batting lead off this season, but his approach to the plate did not change. “It’s about the same,” Bates said. “I’m usually nine-hole, so it’s two speed guys back-to-back. So I just took the same approach.” White has played everyday for the Slammers, and Bates said the team figured he was the right…
