Marion, Ill. (August 30, 2016) – The Southern Illinois Miners topped the Gateway Grizzlies 4-2 on the strength of six shutout innings by Corey Sessions and three home runs, taking the series opener on Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark in Sauget. The win improved their record to 60-31, marking the third straight year that the club has won sixty or more games, and the first time in Frontier League history a team has accomplished that feat. In the second inning, the Miners’ captain got them on the board with a deep solo home run by Steve Marino against Will Landsheft (6-8), with Marino’s fifteenth homer of the season making it 1-0. Shane Kennedy would add a solo homer to right-center field, his fourth of 2016, to double the lead to 2-0, and Aaron Gates added a solo shot of his own down the right field line for his seventh of the season and a 3-0 Miners advantage. In the process, Sessions (1-2) shut down the Grizzlies on the mound, allowing just three baserunners (one hit- a single in the third inning- and two walks) in six innings with no runs allowed, earning his first professional win.
