RAIN HALTS PLAY IN OPENER

Florence, Ky. – The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, trailed the Washington Wild Things 4-1 before rain halted play at UC Health Stadium in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was the second rain delay of the game. The first one lasted only 90 seconds, but the second one brought heavy rains and a show of lightning that forced the umpires to postpone the game. The Wild Things (30-30) jumped on the Freedom (27-36) early with three runs in the first two innings against Patrick McGrath. McGrath ended up allowing four runs in five hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Freedom put the leadoff man on the base paths in four of their five innings and finally broke through in the fifth. Trailing 4-0, Daniel Fraga and Mason Salazar delivered singles before Andre Mercurio lined a double, scoring Fraga and making the score 4-1. The next batter, Taylor Oldham, was hit by a pitch that slipped out of Trevor Foss’ hand. Following the pitch, the game was forced into a delay and did not resume.
