PITCHING SHINES AS GRIZZLIES SWEEP CORNBELTERS

Sauget, Ill. – The Gateway Grizzlies used four pitchers to shutout the Normal CornBelters on Thursday evening at GCS Ballpark, sweeping Normal in a three-game set with a 1-0 victory. RHP Trevor Richards (1-1) was terrific through six innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just four hits. The Grizzlies (7-5) then used LHP Jon Jones, RHPJordan Wellander, and RHP JaVaun West to finish the game. All three relievers did not surrender a single hit to Normal’s offense. The lone run for Gateway came in the fourth against CornBelters starter Michael Schweiss. With one out, Blake Brown stepped in and a bashed a solo homer over the left field wall. Brown’s third long ball of the season made it 1-0. Schweiss did not allow another run, while two Normal relievers shut out Gateway’s offense the rest of the way. West then struck out Alex Schmidt with one out and induced a ground ball to end the game.
