After a stellar summer on the mound, Evansville pitcher Matt Wivinis has been signed by the New York Yankees. Wivinis, a Downers Grove, Ill. native and Eastern Illinois University product, finished the regular season 4-0 for Evansville with a 1.58 ERA. He made 12 appearances and five starts after being signed by the Otters July 2. In the postseason, Wivinis went 2-1 with a 3.92 ERA in three starts, helping Evansville win the Frontier League title for the first time in 10 years and the franchise’s second overall. Wivinis pitched seven innings in Game 1 of the Division Series against Joliet Sept. 7, giving up two hits and one earned run. He also gave the Otters a 1-0 lead in the Frontier League Championship Series against River City Sept. 13, pitching eight solid innings while striking out six. Wivinis pitched Game 4 Sunday in O’Fallon, Mo. for his final appearance with Evansville.
