Miners Pound Evansville On Opening Night

Marion, Ill.- The Southern Illinois Miners broke out the bats and used them to rattle off 15 total hits on Opening Night against the Evansville Otters on Friday at Rent One Park, scoring four runs in the first and never looking back in an 11-1 thrashing to improve to 1-0 on the young 2017 season. The offensive onslaught started in the bottom of the first inning when Craig Massey, Joel McKeithan and Nolan Earley opened the game with three consecutive singles off of former Miner and Evansville starter Hunter Ackerman (0-1), with Earley’s driving in the game’s first run. Two more runs would score one pitch later when Justin Chigbogu launched a double over the head of the right fielder, with an error on the play by the Otters helping make the score 3-0 and move Chigbogu to third base. He would score on an RBI groundout by Ben Moore to make it 4-0 Miners. Southern Illinois wasn’t done there, as they piled on three runs in the third and fourth innings.
