MINERS CLINCH THIRD STRAIGHT DIVISION CROWN

Marion, Ill. (August 27, 2016) – The Southern Illinois Miners used four homers and five late runs to beat the Evansville Otters 7-2 at Bosse Field on Saturday night, clinching their third straight division title and the #1 seed in the upcoming Frontier League playoffs. It is the second time in the league’s history that a team has won three straight division crowns (after the 2005-07 Washington Wild Things), and also the second year in a row the Miners will be the top-seeded team. The Miners got on the board first on a solo home run by Toby DeMello in the second inning, and added another in the third when Aaron Gates led off with a triple, and two batters later a double play ball off the bat of Craig Massey brought him home for a 2-0 Miners lead. That’s what the score would remain as despite getting their leadoff man on base in four of the first six innings and five of the first eight, Evansville could not manage a run against the Miners’ pitching staff. In the eighth inning, the Miners would surge ahead further as Alex De Leon crushed a solo home run off of Tyler Levine…
