Miners Bounce Back, Beat Beach Bums To Even Series

MARION, Ill. – The Southern Illinois Miners scored four runs in the first inning and led wire-to-wire to back an outstanding start by Ethan Gibbons in an 8-3 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Saturday night at Wuerfel Park, evening the weekend series at one game apiece. The Miners opened the scoring right away as the first five batters of the game reached base. London Lindley and Craig Massey opened with singles against Beach Bums starter Nate Abel (1-1), and after Nolan Earley walked to load the bases, Justin Chigbogu drove home the game’s first runs with a single to make it 2-0 Miners. Ryan Lashley followed with an RBI single of his own, and two batters later, Ben Moore’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 Miners. Gibbons (1-1), making his second professional start, bent but did not break in the early innings, as the Beach Bums had runners in scoring position in each of the first three frames, but got no runs on the board.
