LONGTIME EVANSVILLE FLAG CHAIRMAN MARVIN GRAY PASSES AWAY

Marvin Gray, a fixture around Bosse Field and sporting events throughout Indiana for more than 50 years, passed away at age 75 early on Thursday morning. Marvin was well known throughout the baseball community for his duties around Bosse Field. He was a fixture at games since the Otters arrived in 1995 and before that for the Southern League’s Evansville E-Sox in the 1960s, the American Association’s Evansville Triplets in the 1970s and 1980s, and for the University of Evansville Purple Aces along with thousands of high school athletic events. Marvin raised and lowered the flag at Bosse Field from when he was a teenager until his health prevented him from walking out to the flagpole a few years ago, though he continued to attend Otters games in a wheelchair until earlier this month. He operated Bosse Field’s manual scoreboard in the 70s along with participating in behind the scenes tasks such as stuffing programs, taking player pictures, leading the crowd in the YMCA, managing the player pass list, providing water for umpires, tracking attendance and game times, distributing box scores, setting up chairs and tables for group outings, and letting vendors into the ballpark.
