GRIZZLIES ROUND OUT COACHING STAFF WITH HIRING OF BARRETT

The Gateway Grizzlies will round out their coaching staff for the 2017 season by hiring former Grizzlies pitcher Richard Barrett as the assistant pitching coach. The former closer spent six years in independent baseball and holds two franchise records for the Grizzlies, including most games pitched (153) and most saves in a career (51). “When I signed as a player, I always had one goal: Win a championship,” Barrett said. That goal hasn’t changed with his transition into coaching as he is prepared to train this year’s players to “go out there and compete to win every night.” In 2013, Barrett had an All-Star season where he collected a team-high 14 saves in 35 games pitched and a posted 3.15 ERA. In 2014, he improved to 19 saves with a 2.89 ERA. Despite successful seasons in the league, Barrett only saw the postseason once in the 2012 season. “I only got a small taste of the playoffs, and it left a bitter taste in my mouth,” Barrett said.
