Five years in, and the Freedom are still proud to lay claim as the first professional baseball team with a ballpark that became allergy friendly on an annual basis, specifically when it comes peanuts. Peanuts and their place at ballparks recently came back into the news when the Hartford Yard Goats decided to ban them for the upcoming 2019 season, marking the first affiliated club to make such a move. It’s a decision that at face value comes with both push back, but also praise from families that can finally take their baseball loving kids to a game. “There’s something to being able to take your baseball loving kid to a baseball game,” Kristina King, mother of a child with a severe peanut allergy said during a 2014 interview at UC Health Stadium, the season in which the Freedom’s policy was changed. “This decision by the Freedom opens up a whole new world to my son.” Countless other personal conversations at the ballpark with similar families to Kristina King, social media messages and emails confirm the gratitude these families now have.
