Evansville Downs Southern Illinois Behind Strong Pitching

PADUCAH, Ky. – The Evansville Otters opened up exhibition play with a 3-1 win over the Southern Illinois Miners on Saturday. Felix Baez earned the victory after throwing three scoreless innings. Baez gave up a hit to Craig Massey to open the game, but a double play took the Miner runner off the bases. Baez would face the minimum as Otters’ pitching retired the next 16 batters after the lead off single. The game featured strong performances from the Otters bullpen as four pitchers made appearances in relief, totaling nine strikeouts between them. Taylore Cherry had two strikeouts and recorded the save. Evansville got the scoring started in the first inning after Myles Babitt walked to lead off the game and then advanced to second on a Kody Knaus throwing error. Josh Allen then reached on another throwing error, allowing Babitt to score to give the Otters a 1-0 lead. The Otters added two more runs in the fifth. Sam Roberson was hit by a pitch and Lance Montano followed with an RBI double. Montano would advance to third base on a passed ball before Babitt delivered an RBI ground out.
