COAKLEY, RICE ADDED TO OTTERS ROSTER

The Evansville Otters have signed right-handed pitcher Nathan Coakley and acquired left-handed pitcher Chris Rice in a trade with the Joliet Slammers for a player to be named later. Coakley played college baseball at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. for two seasons after starting his collegiate career at Ventura College. “We worked Nathan out last year and really liked his arm,” Otters manager Andy McCauley said. “We just didn’t have a need at the time.” With the Cougars in 2016, Coakley started 16 games and went the distance in nine of them. He finished the season 6-9 with a 4.82 ERA in 97 innings of work. He struck out 105 batters and walked 43. “He showed really well at a couple tryouts recently and we are excited to have him to compete for a bullpen job this year,” McCauley added. Meanwhile, Rice comes to Evansville in a trade after helping Joliet reach the playoffs last season. Rice made 26 appearances in 2016 and started eight games for the Slammers during the regular season, finishing 4-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 64 innings on the mound.
