The Quebec Capitales made a big catch by formalizing the signing of Gift Ngoepe. The South African shortstop played 40 games in the Major Leagues in 2017 and 2018 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Toronto Blue Jays. He became the first player from the African continent to play Major League Baseball. With more than 1000 professional games under his belt, the 31-year-old veteran will be a mainstay for the Quebec team. Gift Ngoepe has an inspiring career in professional baseball. In 2009, at the age of 19, he made his debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and eventually rose through the ranks of affiliated baseball one by one. During his career in affiliated baseball, the dynamic outfield produced statistics showing a combination of batting power and speed on the trails (50 home runs and 95 stolen bases).
