JOLIET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, scored a second consecutive 5-1 decision, taking the opener from the Joliet Slammers on the road on a chilly Friday night. A cold night made for a good evening for pitchers. Schaumburg utilized a leadoff walk in the fourth to Sean Godfrey to open the scoring. Zach Weigel legged out a bunt single and with the bases unoccupied, both runners moved one station further. Seth Spivey opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly. Joliet tied the game against Aryton Costa in the bottom of the inning, the lone run Costa allowed in his first start.Kyle Ruchim put Schaumburg ahead for good with a two-out double in the fifth to plate Josh Gardiner, who walked. Three runs scored in the eighth to put the game away as Gardiner and David Harris tallied RBI singles with Kenny Towns floating a sacrifice fly. Costa worked six innings in his first start, striking out five and allowing just the one run on five hits to earn the win.
