SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, kicked off the 2017 season in style, collecting a 3-0 shutout of the Traverse City Beach Bums at Boomers Stadium. Gunnar Kines, the first left-handed opening night starter in franchise history, struck out seven in five shutout innings to open the year with a win. After issuing a leadoff walk, Kines struck out the next four batters. Schaumburg scored all three runs in the fifth inning. Sean Godfrey opened with a double and scored on an RBI single from Will Soto. With two outs and the bases loaded, David Harris delivered a two-run single to cap the frame. Schaumburg set a franchise record by recording 17 strikeouts in the game. Last year in the opener, the team set a record for strikeouts by the hitters, who fanned just four times this year. Barrington, Ill. native Rob McDonnell left the bases loaded in the sixth, utilizing a pair of strikeouts, and fanned four in his two innings.
