Jared Howton had three tremendous seasons in the Frontier League. After playing at the University of Texas-San Antonio, Howton—a left-handed pitcher—was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds and played in their organization during the 2001 season. Despite being released by the Reds after that season, he was contacted by a number of independent leagues, including the Frontier League. Jared quickly developed a connection with coach Jeff Isom and decided to sign with the Washington Wild Things. “Washington seemed like the right fit. It was a fresh start for me at that point in my career,” said Howton. Howton went on to pitch for the Wild Things for two seasons. In 2002, his greatest season, he led the league with a 1.89 ERA and tied the league lead with 11 wins. He had 89 strikeouts and only 38 walks in 109 innings of work.
