WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (50-46) lost 8-5 to the Kansas City Monarchs at Shaw Park on Wednesday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 4-2 in the top of the sixth inning, the Monarchs (62-34) rallied for five runs. JC Escarra, Casey Gillaspie, and Giovanni Brusa opened the inning with three straight singles to pull within 4-3. After Kevin Santa grounded into a fielder’s choice, Mallex Smith walked to load the bases. Darnell Sweeney tied the game on a slow groundball up the first base line in which Gillaspie beat the throw to the plate to score the tying run. With the bases still loaded, Ryan Grotjohn singled through the right side to plate Santa and Smith to give Kansas City a 6-4 lead. Jacob Robson capped the rally with an RBI infield single that scored Sweeney.
The Goldeyes closed within 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh when Reggie Pruitt Jr. and Ian Sagdal executed a delayed double steal of home and second with two outs. Pruitt finished the night with three stolen bases.
Santa provided the game’s final margin with an RBI double in the top of the ninth.
Alex Valdez worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth for Kansas City to earn his first save.
Monarchs’ starter Nick Belzer (6-2) picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on five hits in five innings. Belzer walked two and struck out two.
Paul Schwendel (2-4) took the loss in relief for Winnipeg.
The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single from Grotjohn.
Winnipeg tied the game in the bottom of the first when Max Murphy homered over the batter’s eye in centre field. It was Murphy’s 31st home run of the year, which ties Kyle Martin (2021) for the Goldeyes’ single-season record.
Sagdal’s RBI single in the bottom of the third gave the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead.
Winnipeg went in front 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a Jacob Rhinesmith solo home run to right-centre and a Pruitt sacrifice fly.
Landen Bourassa started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in five innings. Bourassa walked none, struck out four, and was pitching on three days of rest.
The Goldeyes have Thursday off and open their final series of the regular season on Friday versus the Sioux Falls Canaries. First pitch at Shaw Park is at 6:35 p.m.
