SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (46-39) lost both games of a double header to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Saturday, dropping the opener 5-1 and falling in the nightcap 3-0.
In game one, the Explorers (40-44) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Chase Harris scored from third on a two-out wild pitch.
The Goldeyes tied the game in the next inning on a David Washington solo home run down the right field line.
Sioux City took the lead for good with a four-run bottom of the fifth. Jack Kelly singled leading off and advanced to second when Harris beat out a sacrifice attempt for a bunt single. Danry Vasquez singled to left to drive in Kelly with the go-ahead run. After Trey Martin sacrificed the runners to second and third, Gabe Snyder singled on a soft line drive to left to plate Harris and Vasquez. Two batters later, Dylan Kelly singled through the left side to score Snyder with the Explorers’ fifth run.
Max Kuhns pitched two scoreless innings over the sixth and seventh to close out the game.
Explorers’ starter Nivaldo Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one earned run on three hits over five innings. Rodriguez walked none and struck out nine.
Luis Ramirez (10-5) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in four and one-third innings. Ramirez walked one and struck out five.
Paul Schwendel made his Goldeyes’ debut, and pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth in game one.
In game two, the Explorers broke a scoreless tie with a three-run bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Dylan Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to deep centre that scored Martin with the game’s first run. Blake Tiberi made it 2-0 with an RBI double down the right field line. Zack Kone capped the inning with an RBI infield single on a groundball to third.
Zach Hedges (3-7) pitched six shutout innings on one hit to pick up the win for the Explorers. Hedges walked none and struck out eight.
Jhon Vargas (4-2) started for Winnipeg and took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in three and one-third innings. Vargas walked two and struck out four.
Erasmo Pinales and Tasker Strobel each worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Goldeyes in the nightcap.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. Landen Bourassa (4-5, 4.19) faces right-hander Matt Pobereyko (2-0, 0.00). All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
