SIOUX CITY, IA – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (24-21) lost 10-7 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Sunday night.
With the Goldeyes leading 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Explorers scored four runs to win the game. Trey Martin walked leading off. After Erasmo Pinales retired the next two hitters, Tasker Strobel came in from the bullpen. Blake Tiberi was hit by a pitch, and the Explorers (19-25) tied the game when Nate Samson hit a soft single to left that scored Martin. Zack Kone followed with a three-run home run to left.
The Goldeyes had just rallied to take the lead in the top of the ninth. Trailing 6-5, Justin Thompson walked on four pitches leading off. Two batters later, Thompson took third when Raul Navarro singled to right on an 0-2 count. After Navarro stole second base, Eric Rivera singled through a drawn in infield to score Thompson and Rivera.
Kevin Lenik (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Sioux City. Strobel (1-3) took the loss for Winnipeg.
The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two outs and no one on base, Ian Sagdal extending the inning with an infield single. Max Murphy followed with a two-run home run to right-centre.
Sioux City tied the game in the bottom of the first. Danny Amaral walked with one out, took third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a Martin double down the left field line. Martin moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored the tying run on Danry Vasquez’s dribbler in front of the plate.
Tiberi led off the bottom of the second with a home run to centre that gave the Explorers a 3-2 lead.
Sagdal singled through the left side leading off the top of the fourth and took second when Murphy walked. Two batters later, David Washington, hitting right-handed, ripped a single to left that scored Sagdal with the tying run.
Hidekel Gonzalez led off the top of the fifth with a home run to centre that put Winnipeg ahead 4-3.
The Explorers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead. Chase Harris doubled down the left field line with one out. After Amaral and Martin walked to load the bases, Vasquez drove a sacrifice fly to right that scored Harris. Sebastian Zawada followed with a single to left that plated Amaral to make it 5-4 Sioux City, and the Explorers opened a 6-4 lead on an RBI single from Tiberi.
The Goldeyes closed within 6-5 in the top of the eighth when Washington smacked a two-out, solo home run to left.
Freisis Adames started for the Goldeyes and took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits over five innings. Adames walked four and struck out two.
Sioux City starter Patrick Ledet also took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Ledet walked three and struck out six.
Thompson made his professional debut, starting the game at second base for Winnipeg.
