Explorers Power Past Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (27-24) lost 11-4 to the Sioux City Explorers at Shaw Park on Saturday night.

Sioux City (21-29) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out, two-run home run to left from Tyler Rando.

The Explorers set the table in the second with a Zack Kone leadoff walk and a Blake Tiberi infield single.  After Shane Podsednik’s groundout to shortstop advanced the runners, Patrick Ledet made it 3-0 with an RBI groundout to first.

Winnipeg pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the third.  Hidekel Gonzalez doubled to left-centre leading off and scored two batters later when Reggie Pruitt Jr. doubled down the left field line.  Ian Sagdal followed with a long double to right that scored Pruitt.

Podsednik re-extended Sioux City’s lead with a two-out, two-run home run down the left field line in the top of the fourth.  Patrick Ledet drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the sixth that made it 6-2.

The Explorers opened a 9-2 lead in the eighth when Tiberi scored on a wild pitch and was followed by a two-out, two-run single from Michael Lang.

The Goldeyes sliced the deficit to 9-4 in the bottom of the eight on a Max Murphy RBI single that scored Pruitt.  Sagdal came home later in the inning on a passed ball.

Podsednik provided the game’s final margin with a two-run home run to left in the top of the ninth.

Sioux City starter Tom Windle (3-2) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits in six and two-thirds innings.  Windle walked one and struck out eight.

RJ Martinez (4-4) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing six earned runs on three hits in five and two-thirds innings.  Martinez walked six and struck out four.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.  Luis Ramirez (5-2, 4.08) faces right-hander Zach Hedges (0-3, 5.24).
