Eighth inning Lincoln Saltdogs rally captures series victory over the Chicago Dogs, 3-2.
Following losses in the first two games of the series, changes needed to be made in the Dogs lineup in an attempt to avoid a series loss.
For the first time since game three of the season, the Dogs broke up the 2-3-4 spot in the batting lineup, consisting of Brantley Bell, Narciso Crook and Jacob Teter.
Dogs manager Jeff Isom decided to showcase a lineup consisting of Bell at the leadoff spot, while Nick Dalesandro moved to the two hole. Crook and Teter remained in the three and four spots.
The core of the Dogs lineup made an early impact, as the Dogs got on the board in the first inning from a Jacob Teter two run blast.
Teter’s home run, his 18th of the season, moves him just one home run out of the league lead, sitting behind Lake Country’s Ryan Hernandez.
The two run first inning from the Dogs were the only runs the team scored the entire evening, striking out eight times on the night.
Lincoln pitching kept the Dogs offense quiet. Following the first inning, Lincoln starting pitcher Karan Patel threw five scoreless innings. The bullpen behind him consisting of Wyatt Sparks and Brandon McCabe held it down, combining for three shutout innings of relief.
Lincoln entered the late innings down a run, tasked with scoring off of Dogs closer Joey Marciano.
An eighth inning Lincoln rally was sparked by Zane Zurbrugg, hitting a one out solo home run to tie the game.
The rally continued as pinch hitter Matt Pita hit an RBI double, driving in Kyle Battle.
Lincoln’s two run eighth inning was enough run support to take the lead and hold the lead for the remainder of the game, winning the series.
The Dogs will attempt to avoid the sweep in the series finale in Lincoln.
