Dogs Fall to the Cougars in a Slugfest

ROSEMONT, ILL. – The Kane County Cougars defeated the Chicago Dogs 11-10 Tuesday night at Impact Field. The loss drops the Dogs to 24-24 this season and tied for third place in the American Association’s eastern division.

The game featured 23 runs and 29 hits, which is the complete opposite of Monday night’s 2-1 victory for the Dogs.

The Cougars mustered an early 9-3 lead against Chicago and starting pitcher Trevor Lane. Kane County smashed four home runs in the first six innings, including two towering blasts from Armond Upshaw, and back-to-back third-inning blasts from J.D. Osborne and Jonah Davis, respectively.

The Dogs made the game extremely interesting, despite the six-run lead for Kane County.

The Dogs scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Mangieri smacked a double to left field that scored Nick Heath, and Jesus Lujano grounded out to score Mangieri.

The comeback was on in the seventh when the Dogs scored four more runs to tie the ballgame.

David Maberry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, then three runs came in during Lujano’s at-bat. First, a passed ball scored Josh Altmann. Lujano then cleared the bases on a double to left field, which scored Heath and Maberry.

The Cougars persisted and sent two more runners around the base paths in the top of the eighth inning. Josh Altmann’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame was the final Chicago run.

Both starting pitchers struggled in the slugfest.

Chicago pitcher Lane threw 5.1 innings and allowed 11 hits, six earned runs and six strikeouts. Lane walked zero batters for the first time since May 26 – seven starts ago.

Kane County starting pitcher Luke Westphal only lasted three innings and surrendered two earned runs and four hits. The Dogs did the bulk of their damage against a tough Kane County bullpen. Chicago tallied nine hits and seven runs against one of the top bullpens in the American Association.

Five Chicago hitters – Lujano, Maberry, Mangieri, Dylan Rosa, and Altmann – had multiple hits on the Fourth of July. Those five hitters accounted for seven of the Dogs’ 10 RBI.

The Dogs look to win their first series since June 21 against the Kane County Cougars. The first pitch is at 11:30 am for the Education Game.
