A good case can be made that 6-foot-7, 235-pound Johnny Hellweg is the hottest former Can-Am League player knocking on the major league door these days, but he is far from the only graduate of the circuit starting its 14th season this week who is drawing his paycheck one step below baseball’s nirvana. Rosters change daily, but the records maintained by the Independent Baseball Insider show at least seven former Can-Am Leaguers in Triple-A with major league organizations. Hellweg, who was a standout with the New Jersey Jackals (19 saves) just last season, has posted saves in his last four appearances with the Indianapolis Indians, Pittsburgh’s top farm club, while maintaining his perfect season-long earned run average. What is more, the 29-year-old righty has held International League hitters to a .174 batting average in his 12 appearances, seven of which (7-for-7) have ended up in saves. He has allowed only eight hits and five walks in 14 innings while striking out 11.
