Independent Baseball Chatter – by Bob Wirz When he was only 24 in 2013 Johnny Hellweg got seven starts and a relief appearance with the Milwaukee Brewers mixed in during a 13-5 minor league season. The future looked rosy for the 6-foot-7 righthander. He pitched very little the next year, followed by a 1-10 record in the minors in 2015 and a 1-5 mark in the San Diego farm system the next season before getting bounced and spending the last two months of the campaign in the New Jersey Jackals’ bullpen. The onetime Florida State College (Jacksonville) athlete had a major turnaround last year, turning in the Can-Am League’s second best saves total (19) and getting an opportunity with Pittsburgh’s Double-A club in Altoona when that club was beset with fatigue with about two weeks remaining. All the Curve did was sweep six consecutive Eastern League playoff games with Hellweg picking up Playoff MVP Mitch Keller in the eighth inning of the championship game. The 29-year-old’s fortunes are bright once again as he has a 0.00 earned run average with five saves in 10 appearances out of the bullpen with the Pirates’ top farm club in Indianapolis, including two in…
