AVERAGE CAN-AM LEAGUE GAME TIME DROPS 19 MINUTES IN 2018

Durham, N.C. — The average 2018 regular-season nine-inning game time in the Can-Am League was 2 hours, 49 minutes, a decrease of 19 minutes, or 10%, from the 2017 average of 3 hours, 8 minutes. The largest differences were seen in games at New Jersey and at Sussex County, with reductions of 24 minutes and 23 minutes, respectively, both decreases of 12%. The shortest average game times were at Québec (2:40) and at Ottawa (2:41). No club’s average game time was longer than 2:57. Over the last few seasons, the league has taken a number of initiatives to reduce game times, including implementing the international tiebreaker rule, in which a runner begins the 11th inning on second base. All affiliated minor leagues put into place a similar rule starting this season. Much of 2018’s reduction in nine-inning game time can be attributed to the league’s new pace of play rules, which include: – Mound visits limited to 30 seconds. – One catcher’s visit to the mound per inning, per pitcher. – A pitcher must deliver a pitch within 20 seconds of receiving the ball.
