Beavers Hold On To Beat Hoppers, 9-6

UTICA, Mich. – The Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (10-19) defeated the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (15-13), with a final score of on 9-6 Sunday at Jimmy John’s Field.

Dyson Johnson would have a dominant performance in his first pitching win of the season, tallying nine strikeouts and only allowing one hit in 6.0 innings. Blake Bean also had a great game, batting 3-for-5, with two singles, a grand slam, two runs scored, and four RBIs.

The Beavers would have an offensive explosion in the second, loading the bases early in the inning. Ray Hilbrich scored from third after Ben Wilcoxson was hit by a pitch. Immediately following, Bean hit a grand slam home run.

The bases would fill again for Birmingham in the third, and Hilbrich scored his second run after Pablo Ruiz grounded out, followed by an RBI single from Matt Piotrowski, scoring Christian Ortega and giving the Beavers a 7-0 lead at the end of the half-inning.

Ortega added another run for Birmingham in the fifth, hitting a solo home run to left-center field, then in the sixth, Bean scored a run off of a wild pitch.

The Hoppers first hit did not come until the top of the sixth inning, on a Todd Mattox triple. They earned their first run of the game in the seventh inning, Noah Marcoux scoring on a fly out from Bryant Shellenbarger. Eastside continued to rally in the eighth. Grant Stephenson scored when Marcoux was walked into loaded bases. That was immediately be followed by a grand slam from Matt Goehrig, adding four more runs for the Hoppers and bringing the score closer at 9-6.
